How to Choose an AI Visibility (GEO/AEO) Tool

The 'best AEO tools' listicles are multiplying, and most rank whatever the author is affiliated with. Here is an honest framework for evaluating GEO and AI-visibility tools, so you can judge any list for yourself.

Search “best AEO tools” and you will find a wave of near-identical listicles, for example several “10 Best AEO Tools in 2026” roundups posted across subreddits within days. Most rank whatever the author sells or is paid to feature. Rather than add another ranking, here is how to judge any tool yourself.

What a serious tool must do

  • Cover multiple engines. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews each answer differently and cite different sources. A tool that only watches ChatGPT hides half the picture. Practitioners keep asking for exactly this, for example a reliable AI Overviews rank tracker.
  • Sample repeatedly. Model outputs vary run to run. One check is a snapshot, not a measurement. A tool should sample each prompt several times and report a rate.
  • Extract citations and competitors, not just presence. Whether you appear is the shallow signal. Which sources the engine cited, and which competitors it named instead, is where the strategy comes from.
  • Connect to action. A dashboard that tells you your score but not what to do is half a product. The harder, more valuable job is closing the gap.

Categories of tool

  • Single-engine trackers. Cheap, narrow. Fine for a first pulse on ChatGPT.
  • Multi-engine monitors. The real measurement layer: share of voice, citations, competitor comparison over time.
  • Action platforms. Monitoring plus the content, schema, and distribution work that moves the number. Fewer of these exist because the build is harder.

How to decide

Match the tool to your job. If you only need to know whether you are in ChatGPT for one query, a simple tracker is enough. If you need to move share of voice across engines and defend the budget, you need multi-engine measurement tied to action.

We built our audit around the second job, across five engines with full citation maps. The honest first step, whatever tool you pick, is a baseline. Run the free visibility check and compare it to anything else you try.
