How AI Assistants Decide Which Brands to Recommend

When ChatGPT or Perplexity names a few vendors, what actually drove the choice? Here is what we know about how models pick brands to recommend, drawn from how they are built and what category audits consistently show.

It is one of the most-asked questions in the AI and marketing communities right now: how do AI tools decide which brands to recommend, how do assistants pick which brands to name, and how are they deciding which companies to surface. No vendor publishes the exact algorithm, but you can reason about it from how these systems work and what category audits keep showing.

Four things that consistently drive it

1. Frequency and clarity of description. Models answer from patterns in their training and retrieval. If your brand is described often, and clearly, as the thing the buyer is asking for, you are a strong candidate. If your positioning is vague, the model reaches for a competitor who made it obvious.

2. Trust in the sources that mention you. A mention on a source the model weights heavily, a major review site, a busy community thread, a respected roundup, counts for far more than the same words on a low-authority page. This is why the citation source map for a category is usually a short list of the same trusted domains.

3. Match to the specific need. Models are good at conditions. “Best X for enterprise,” “cheapest X that scales,” “X for regulated industries.” If your content states clearly who you are for and who you are not, you get named for the right queries. Generic content gets skipped when the query gets specific.

4. Extractability. A claim a model can lift verbatim, structured and unambiguous, is easier to use than one it has to infer. Comparison tables, FAQ schema, and direct statements make you the low-effort source to quote.

What you cannot control, and what you can

You cannot control the model’s training or its ranking of sources. You can control how clearly and how often you are described in the places it trusts. That is the entire game: be frequently, clearly, and credibly described where the model looks.
