LLM SEO: What It Is, and How It Differs from SEO, GEO and AEO

LLM SEO is the practice of getting your brand into the answers large language models generate. It overlaps heavily with GEO and AEO. Here is what the term means, what actually moves it, and why the acronym matters less than the work.

Search the phrase and you will find a lot of confusion. One r/seogrowth thread asks flatly how LLM SEO is different from traditional SEO; another just asks what “LLM SEO” even means; and over in r/aeo, someone argues the whole term is off. They are all circling the same thing.

What LLM SEO actually means

LLM SEO is optimizing so that large language models, the engines behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, mention and cite your brand when they answer a buyer’s question. That is it. It is the same intent as GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization). The acronyms compete; the work does not.

How it differs from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO earns a ranked link that a human scans and clicks. LLM SEO earns a place inside the answer itself. There is no list of ten links to be third on. The model writes a paragraph, names a few options, and cites a few sources. You are in that paragraph or you are not.

That changes what you optimize for:

  • Extractability over keyword density. Clear claims a model can lift verbatim, structured with headings, tables, and schema.
  • Third-party presence over on-site everything. Models lean on sources they trust, so being reviewed on G2, discussed on Reddit, and explained on YouTube matters as much as your own pages.
  • Share of voice over rankings. The metric is how often you are named across engines, not where you sit on a SERP.

What actually moves it

Practitioners keep converging on the same tactics, for example in this r/GrowthHacking thread on LLM SEO agency tactics that actually work: answer the real question directly, publish comparison and alternative pages so the model has a source for head-to-heads, add FAQ and product schema, and earn mentions on the sources models cite. None of it is magic. Most of it is good SEO pointed at a new reader: the model.

Stop arguing about the acronym

LLM SEO, GEO, AEO. Pick one and measure. The only way to know whether it is working for your brand is to ask the engines directly and count how often you are named. Run the free visibility check and see where you stand.
